What is dental cleaning?
There are two types of cleaning we perform; scaling and deep cleaning.
Scaling involves the removal of tartar and plaque built up on surface of the teeth using pressured water, a vibrating scaling instrument, a cleaning agent (prophy paste) and fluoride. It is a vital preventative procedure in addition to the brushing, flossing and mouthwash you do at home because it gets rid of the hard and persistent tartar and plaque buildup on your teeth. Each scaling treatment we perform is for the whole mouth.
Deep cleaning is a procedure that is required when there is gum disease. Tartar and plaque buildup creates bacteria which may lead to inflammation of the gums (called gingivitis). Over time, this inflammation can reach down to the foundations of the teeth and break down its underlying structure and create pockets of bacteria. If this happens, this may require periodontal therapy or deep cleaning. Deep cleaning involves root planing which is the process of smoothing the gum surface and removing any infected tooth structure. Each deep cleaning session treats one quadrant of your teeth.
How do I know if I need a cleaning?
Do your teeth look like this?
Or more like this?
For both situations above, we still recommend a regular dental cleaning simply because of the prophylactic benefits it offers for the health of your teeth.
For our services, we always charge depending on the difficulty of the job. This means that if your teeth are very clean, you'll get a cheap quote. Cleaning is always an excellent preventative measure against more serious oral problems.
