What are braces and what's involved?

Braces are a dental device that we use to  correct your bite and straighten your teeth over time.

Braces involve the use of bonded brackets, arch wires and elastic bands that move crowded or spaced teeth into the proper position for aesthetic and functional reasons. Over a period of time, this gentle pressure will cause the teeth to shift.

Brace brackets are fitted on using a dental adhesive cement that reacts to ultra-violet light.

Our method: At Dovan Dental, our preferred method for braces is to use traditional titanium alloy metal brackets together with elastic bands placed on the exterior of the teeth. From our experience, this offers the maximum affordability for the final result. We believe it offers the same level of comfort and time involved compared to more expensive techniques like self-ligating braces.

Invisalign braces: We offer limited services for Invisalign braces (which are clear braces). This service will generally be more expensive. Contact us for more information.

Why do we do braces?

For the patient, braces make a tangible difference to someone's appearance, happiness and confidence. For dentists, it is technically complex work, requiring imagination,  excellent problem solving ability and manual dexterity. For both dentist and patient, it is a journey together; an opportunity to get to know each other due to the long duration of the treatment. For all three reasons above, braces just fit with the principles of why we practice dentistry and that's why we love doing them, and doing them well.

Are braces right for you?

Braces can be fitted on people of all ages. For younger persons, braces are usually recommended only after the adult teeth have erupted and are fully formed (usually around age 12). But we have many older patients that decide to get braces as well. Our oldest brace patient was aged in the late fifties.

We only recommend braces after you receive an orthodontic consultation by one of our orthodontic practitioners (see below). This requires an examination of the health, structure and bite of your teeth, and a referral to an independent medical imaging centre for an OPG (Orthopantomogram) and a Lat Ceph (Lateral Cephalometric Radiograph) which are essentially panoramic dental x-rays of your teeth.

How much will it cost?

The cost for each case will vary depending on difficulty and will need to be individually quoted. We strive to keep braces affordable and offer interest free payment plans. For most of our customers we offer a down-payment plan for bracketing the teeth and monthly installments of $200.00 for each brace adjustment.

The consultation fee will be absorbed into the full quote for braces if you decide to undergo braces with us.

We also offer a $500.00 discount for full upfront payment for braces (upper and lower), which saves time in your visits to us.

Our orthodontic practitioners

Several of our dentists are very experienced dentists practicing orthodontic dentistry. Our principle dentist, Dr Hai Dovan has more than 30 years experience with braces and handles very complex cases for affordable prices. Dr William and Dr Andrea are all skilled with orthodontics and have been trained by Dr Hai.
